Cardiothoracic surgeon Mario Castillo-Sang, MD, has joined St. Elizabeth Healthcare, bringing leading-edge expertise in minimally invasive mitral valve surgery and left ventricular assist device implant surgery to the northern Kentucky community ( LVAD) for advanced heart failure.
After earning a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Washington University School of Medicine / Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Castillo-Sang established a program of minimally invasive mitral valve surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC, and more recently built a similar program at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.
“Dr. Castillo-Sang brings an incredible skill set to an already excellent team of cardiothoracic surgeons at St. Elizabeth Healthcare,” said Garren Colvin, President and CEO of St. Elizabeth Healthcare. “His expertise will allow us to ‘expand our capabilities to provide premier cardiac care to the community of northern Kentucky and beyond. ”
He has performed nearly 400 minimally invasive mitral valve surgeries, repairing or replacing the mitral valve that regulates blood flow from the upper left chamber of the heart (atrium) to the lower left chamber (ventricle). He has distinguished himself nationally for his skills and success in complex mitral valve surgeries.
Dr. Castillo-Sang is also among the most experienced LVAD surgeons in Greater Cincinnati and performs a wide variety of other heart surgeries. LVADs are permanent heart pumps implanted to help patients with severe heart failure live longer. Dr. Castillo-Sang plans to establish an LVAD program at the St. Elizabeth Heart and Vascular Institute.
Expanding a cardiovascular center of excellence
Dr. Castillo-Sang expresses his enthusiasm to join the cardiothoracic surgeons of St. Elizabeth Victor Schmelzer, MD; George Christensen, DO; Karl Ulicny, MD; and James Locher, MD, as well as a team of highly experienced cardiologists and staff. Together, they constitute the only Center of Cardiovascular Excellence in Greater Cincinnati, designated by the American Heart Association.
“I think the spirit of the people who work at St. Elizabeth is what attracted me here,” says Dr. Castillo-Sang. “Everyone on this team treat patients as if they were someone’s son or father. These are people who will listen to you, who will be there for you and will not treat you like a number. This team delivers truly compassionate care that is at the top of the spectrum in terms of quality and technical prowess. It is not common for you to have a center with the offers we have here.
