Patiala, June 13
Rajindra Government Hospital has become the first government hospital in the state to perform open heart surgery.
Two surgeries were performed by the Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department of the hospital. One of the complex surgeries was performed by a team of doctors led by super-specialist cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Anumeet Bagga. The surgeries were performed on a 21-year-old boy and a 62-year-old man.
Dr Bagga said the young boy suffered from shortness of breath when engaging in physical activity, even daily routine activities like brushing his teeth and wearing clothes. He said: “The patient had previously been diagnosed with valvular heart disease. Over the past few months, the disease had progressed. We replaced the boy’s diseased valves with prosthetic valves.
Dr Bagga said the operation was performed by stopping heart function and putting the patient on cardiopulmonary bypass. She added that the patient was extubated the next day with an excellent result.
Dr Bagga added that they performed another open heart surgery on a 62-year-old patient, who was diagnosed with mitral regurgitation and had to replace the valve.
Both surgeries were performed free under the Ayushman Bharat Mukh Mantri Sehat Bima Yojana (AB-MMSBY), while the same surgery would cost Rs 7-8 lakh at a private facility.
Dr Bagga said: “Both patients are in good health and recovering rapidly. This was possible with the support of the administration of Government Medical College and Rajindra Hospital.
Dr. Harjinder Singh, Principal Director of the hospital, said, “With successful open heart surgeries, Rajindra Hospital has achieved a remarkable feat. Patients should seek treatment at Rajindra Hospital rather than private facilities.
