Man with Kidney Failure Undergoes Complex Heart Surgery

Chennai, April 15 (UNI) A team of doctors from Medway Heart Institute, a tertiary heart center of Medway Hospitals in the city, performed an extremely difficult aortic dissection operation on a 32-year-old man suffering from kidney failure. Speaking to reporters here today, Dr Anbarasu Mohanraj, Director and Clinical Lead, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon, Medway Heart Institute said the patient, Rajkumar from Tiruvannamalai with a history of kidney failure and of high blood pressure, developed severe pain in his chest and back. Upon immediate examination by local doctors, followed by ECHO and scans, he was diagnosed with aortic dissection, a life-threatening medical condition associated with high morbidity and mortality. Given his serious condition, he was referred to the Medway Heart Institute here for emergency surgery. Being on hemodialysis for kidney failure and having two leaky heart valves further added to the complexity of his aortic dissection surgery, making it a huge surgical challenge, Dr Anbarasu said. The complex and difficult surgery took six long hours, during which her body had to be cooled to 18 degrees centigrade as the blood supply to most of the body had to be shut off to perform the surgery. “After which, we were able to repair both of his valves and correct the aortic dissection. With both heart valves repaired now (instead of replacing the artificial metal valve), the patient does not need to take the blood thinners, which which makes him undergo a kidney transplant in the future, easier and more manageable,” he said. CMD Dr.T.Palaniappan Hospital said that these types of complex cases are only performed in a few elite medical centers across the country as they require superior surgical skills and the latest technology. An aortic dissection is a medical emergency that occurs due to a tear in the inner layer of the large blood vessel that branches from the heart. Blood rushes through the tear, causing the inner and middle layers of the aorta to separate. If not treated promptly, this condition can be life threatening UNI GV 1415
