A 52-year-old man from Howrah who has suffered from heart failure since 2016 underwent a heart transplant at Narayana Superspeciality Hospital in Howrah on Wednesday.
The man has been admitted to hospital several times over the past year, said a doctor who was part of the team that performed the transplant.
âWe received an update on Tuesday that a 56-year-old had died at SSKM Hospital. His heart matches the requirements of the 52-year-old man. A team of doctors from our hospital performed the harvest on Wednesday, âsaid Debasis Das, a cardiac surgeon who was part of the team that performed the transplant.
The organ was taken to Howrah Hospital at around 3 p.m. Wednesday. The transplant started at 3:30 p.m. and lasted about four and a half hours.
Doctors signed up the man for a transplant about three months ago. He could not be enrolled earlier due to high pulmonary pressure.
âThe patient is stable and has been transferred to intensive care. He’s still on a ventilator. We will watch it for a few days, âDas said on Wednesday evening.
Das said that due to heart failure, the 52-year-old man was unable to perform normal activities. Heart failure meant that the heart could not pump enough blood, as a result of which the man developed shortness of breath. In addition, fluid accumulated in various parts of his body.
Besides Das, the surgical team included Nilanjan Dutta and Pradeep Narayan.
The cardiology team consisted of Munna Das, Amitabha Chattopadhyay, Sanjiban Ghosh and Jayita Nandi.
The anesthesia and intensive care team included Manish Sharma, Rangan Koley and Shubhadeep Das.
