Almost 100 people took advantage of the free three-day screening for heart tests at Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva.
Raj Kumar Puran, 76, of Nausori, lined up on Friday for a free screening of his heart.
The mother of three accompanied her husband to the CWM Hospital on Friday for his monthly check-up.
“My husband had to come for his check-up and he saw that there was free cardiac screening, so he got me a number and told me to get checked while waiting,” he said. she declared.
She suffered from rheumatic fever as a child, but did not expect to develop heart disease over the years.
Ms Puran underwent her first bypass surgery in New Zealand in 2004, while her 75-year-old husband underwent bypass surgery in 1995 in Australia.
It was the first time she had been tested at the CWM Hospital.
Cardiac specialist from Pune, India Dr Anuj Shrivastav urged the general public to take advantage of opportunities like this.
“As a cardiologist, most of the people here have high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and need to be diagnosed,” he said.
Dr Shrivastav works with a team organized by Shyadri Specialty Pacific Hospital Limited Fiji which organizes doctors from Deoyani Multi Specialty Hospital in Pune, India in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.
He said the people were still in a very raw state and had not been carefully examined.
“Not many people took into consideration that there was a line for an angiography test and so on,” he said.
“The screening will go a long way in helping us get the data so that when the next team comes we can pass it off for the next angiogram,” he said.
Dr Shrivastav said another team will be arriving soon.
