MIRI (September 28): The family of three-year-old Rebecca Rayam Robson, who is in urgent need of surgery at the National Heart Institute (IJN), is appealing for donations to help cover the expenses that are expected to reach RM40,000.

Rebecca, who suffers from Abnormal Supracardiac Pulmonary Venous Drainage (TAPVD) and Non-restrictive Large Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), was only diagnosed last month after being hospitalized for 12 days following a seizure severe pneumonia.

It was a blessing in disguise that the heart condition was diagnosed when Rebecca was hospitalized, where she received maximum oxygen flow as doctors battled to save her life.

His medical team had noticed physical signs of possible heart disease, which was later confirmed when further tests were carried out.

Although Rebecca is three years and five months old, she weighs less than 10 kg and is the size of a toddler who is half her age.

“Sometimes my daughter’s belly would go up and down due to labored breathing while she slept due to lack of oxygen getting to her heart,” said Rebecca’s mother, Ferrina David, 26.

Ferrina and her husband Robson Bnedick Grunsin, 29, were shocked by Rebecca’s diagnosis, prompting Miri Hospital to rush an appointment with an IJN specialist for treatment.

Robson is a Taman Ceria mechanic who earns less than RM2,000 per month, while Ferrina is a housewife.

The couple also have two other daughters, aged eight and five.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting called on the public to help Rebecca get the care she needs.

“We are appealing to the generosity of warm and caring Mirians for a sponsorship to raise RM35,000 for Rebecca,” Ting told a news conference today.

“We again look forward to the kind sponsorship of Mirians for Rebecca, who is due to be admitted to the IJN on October 1 for surgical correction of her heart condition.”

Robson’s employer has already donated the airfare and bond to the family.

Members of the public can direct donations to Sehati Service & Information Center bank account number 110270010015028 at Alliance Bank.

The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Piasau will hand over the family aid to supplement the Social Welfare Department’s aid to needy families.
